皞峇燈巿長 The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of HobartAlderman Rob Valentine 致辭


I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners,the (Mouheneener) people, their traditions, customs and their association withthe land.

Master, and of course, many distinguish guests.  It is a pleasure to be here today, tomark the anniversary of the academy.

I wasn’t able to be here for the launch, I think theDeputy Mayor at the time, Alderman Eva Ruzicka, presented the Hobart CityCouncil.  But what I want to say isthat, the opportunity that this [academy] provides for our city should not beunderestimated.  We considerourselves a friendly city, a welcoming city, and we all know and hope thatpeace will prevail, and that we will see a growing peace in the world.  Now, of course, there are manyoccasions where that is quite evident that peace is, indeed, notprevailing.

When I first got on thecouncil, there was nothing of this in Hobart.  - at least not one that was obvious to me. To thinkthat you have chosen to make Hobart your home, and that you have chosen topromote peace with the Academy, is certainly appreciated. And we want to thankyou, as an Academy, for how much you add to the multiculturalism of ourcommunity and the understanding that you bring to the community; the way,indeed, that you are involved in the community.

That is very much appreciated, Master Wang, and wejust want you to know that you are welcomed here in this city, and we want topromote peace just like these candles show today.  And if that is learning to how to make the candle lighterwork, if that is what it takes, then we’ve done that this morning.
